Riva 1920 Christmas Tree Contest
April 2021
12 weeks
(80 hours)
Brief:
- Material: Solid wood, scented cedar essence
- Dimensions: Cone, base diameter 230mm, high 500mm
- Realization: the project must be realized by turning from a single block of cedar and with other process
- Aesthetic: must be integrable with the other 5 existing Christmas trees

RIVA 1920
Riva1920 is a Riva family business specialized in solid wood furniture founded in Cantu (Como) in 1920.

Aesthetic
Design semantic
This Christmas tree has three aesthetic elements to consider:
1) Vertical and horizontal grooves determine surfaces that in a very stylized way recall the branches of pine.
2) The highest horizontal groove creates the tip on top.
3) Looking at the base, the cuts are arranged with a geometry reminiscent of the ice crystal.

Manufacturing
How is made?
a) The conical shape is obtained through the use of a combined lathe machine with CNC milling head initial and horizontal grooves.
b) Subsequently, stopping the rotation and using the CNC milling head, the grooves are practiced at different depths, with progressive passes along the entire length, using a radiated head cutter (CerIN 62RXL.100 radiated head cutter)
c) Between one milling and another the CNC lathe rotates the cone by 15°
d) After making all the grooves, the head and tail are finished.

Media
Evaluation
A 3d model has been created from which both the model to be rendered and the model for 3D printing were obtained. With this different media is now possible a visual and overall evaluation.

Design Coherence Verification
How it integrates with existing trees?
In order to verify how it integrates with the existing 5 Christmas trees, a photomontage was created starting from the rendering of the model.
